Chem Scope, Inc.

Course Objectives and Course Curriculum:

Learning Tasks: The persons completing this course successfully, will have a beginning competence for the implementation of mold remediation procedures. Those who have experience in the field of asbestos abatement, lead abatement or mold remediation will improve their skills and knowledge.

About the Course and Instructors: This is a 2 day course for workers with an additional one day for supervisors. The training is designed for building professionals including tradesmen such as carpenters, demolition staff, abatement contractors, maintenance staff and building owners or managers. Principal instructors are Ronald D. Arena, Sr of Chem Scope, Inc, and Earl Thompson of Baron Consulting Co. Ron is an analytical chemist and Earl is a microbiologist, each with more than 20 years experience with indoor quality or mold issues.

Curriculum: The topics for the 2-day workers segment include background information on indoor air quality, proposed and existing regulations, the importance of moisture and ventilation, biological materials including mold and bacteria, and sources of indoor air pollution; personal protection for mold remediation; mold remediation methods; work practices; other hazards besides mold. The supervisors additional day of training includes mold inspection and assessment, legal issues, building systems and supervisory techniques. Hands on training is given in construction of containment, use of negative air machines, HEPA vacuums, airless sprayers, personal decontamination, donning and use of respirators and protective suits.

Limitations of the Training: There are no regulations in effect governing training curricula or the execution of mold remediation. This course was developed in accordance with available guidance and experience. A certificate of training is issued, although there is no regulatory agency who formally recognizes this or other training or recognizes the term "certified" mold worker, etc" . This training is not adequate to abate asbestos containing materials at a work site; separate training and EPA accreditation is needed. We do offer courses which upon completion confer EPA accreditation on persons to do asbestos abatement. Our asbestos courses are also State of Connecticut Accredited and accepted by CONES (Consortium Of Northeast States) for state licensing and certification requirements. This training is not adequate to abate lead at residential sites in Connecticut. We do have lead training courses which are Accredited by the State of Connecticut for this purpose.

The use of the information gained from the course is the student’s responsibility. This is a changing and growing field. Some of the controls may not be adequate for specific sites. The student should stay abreast of the field and consult with qualified experts to gain more knowledge. More advanced courses may be appropriate for specific applications. For example, those dealing with other biological hazards may need to take hazwopper training.

Requirements for Certificate Award: A course certificate will be awarded to those who successfully complete the course. Attendance of the entire class is required and passing an examination.

Information Sources: Most of the information is from personal experience and knowledge. Most documents cited are from public domain sources including USEPA, NYC Health Dept., OSHA, NIOSH-CDC, California EPA and USDA. These sources or extracts are included with the handout in the CD Rom where feasible. Several articles from private sources are also cited from published literature. The student is encouraged to obtain and read these sources and to follow up with the references given in these documents.

The technology for negative air and containment usage is drawn from our experience with asbestos technology. Although the applications are simpler for mold remediation the same principals apply.
