OSHA CLASS IV TRAINING 2 Hour Asbestos Awareness Training for Schools: This course is required by EPA for school Maintenance and custodial employees and by OSHA for Class IV abatement. Usually, this course is given at the customer site by appointment. OSHA requires annual refresher training for the Class IV training. SYLLABUS 2 hour Awareness Training (Class IV) 1. Information regarding asbestos and its various uses and forms. 2. Information on the health effects associated with asbestos exposure. 3. Location of ACBM identified in the building in which they work. 4. Recognition of damage, deterioration, and delamination of ACBM. 5. Name and phone number of the Asbestos Coordinator (schools). 6. The Availability and location of the Asbestos Management Plan (schools). ASBESTOS CLASS IV PLUS RESPIRATOR TRAINING, EIGHT HOURS. Prerequisite for those who wish to be fit tested is a medical approval form indicating the individual can wear a respirator and the respirator. Individuals must be clean shaven in the area of the respirator seal to the face. This course meets the current OSHA requirements for workers doing Class IV work which may include entering an asbestos work area for the purpose of doing non-asbestos related maintenance or construction tasks. This course does not authorize the individual to remove, repair or directly act upon asbestos containing materials (ACM) or perform consulting work such as collecting samples. This course includes video or slides presentation and hands-on training. Neither the U.S. nor the State of Connecticut have an approval available for this 8 hour course. However, OSHA and EPA recommend that training providers be used who are approved for other asbestos courses be used to conduct this training. Each persons must complete all 8 hours of the training in order to obtain documentation from the provider that the course was completed. There is a short quiz at the end of the course. SYLLABUS: This is a basic course in asbestos awareness for the individual who has no prior asbestos training. The duration is 8 hours: two hours of "awareness training" plus 6 hours of respirator training. Trainees who bring their respirators and their medical approvals to wear a respirator will receive qualitative fit testing for respirator types required. A refresher is required at least annually or sooner if conditions change or the employee shows that he needs retraining sooner. The 2 hour awareness portion contains the following: 2 hour awareness segment: 1. Information regarding asbestos and its various uses and forms. 2. Information on the health effects associated with asbestos exposure. 3. Location of ACBM in building. 4. Recognition of damage, deterioration, and delamination of ACBM. 5. For School staff: Location of the management plan and name and phone number of the asbestos coordinator. 6 hour respirator segment: Basic information on respirators , Why the respirator is necessary and how improper fit, usage, or maintenance can compromise the protective effect of the respirator; What the limitations and capabilities of the respirator are; How to use the respirator effectively in emergency situations, including situations in which the respirator malfunctions; How to inspect, put on and remove, use, and check the seals of the respirator; What the procedures are for maintenance and storage of the respirator; How to recognize medical signs and symptoms that may limit or prevent the effective use of respirators; and the general requirements of OSHA 29 CFR 1910.134
